While this tutorial uses some features of Inkscape and techniques that are not so commonly used, if you've got even just basic experience of using graphics software, you should be able to follow along and produce your own great results. In the process, you'll get to use layers, learn how to apply both patterns and text along paths and also be introduced to using one shape to clip other objects. This final step is rather like applying a frame around one or more objects and this can be a really useful feature of Inkscape to understand.
If you're not familiar with Inkscape, you may find it useful to read our review of the free vector line drawing application and you'll also find a link to the download page there too. There are versions available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and they're all absolutely free to download and use. You'll also want to download my blank cupcake wrapper template to get you off to a flying start.
