Touch-up Facial Features With PhotoImpact

By Sue Chastain, About.com

PhotoImpact's Retouch tools allow you to perform many different types of correction to digital images. Here's how to remove red eye, whiten teeth, conceal blemishes, and smooth skin tones with the retouch tools in Ulead PhotoImpact.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 15-30 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Open the photo you want to correct.
  2. Go to View > Add a View. This will open another window of the same image.
  3. Zoom one of the windows to a comfortable working zoom level. Set the other window view to Actual View [1:1].
  4. Arrange the two windows so you can see both the zoomed view and the normal view at the same time.
  5. In PhotoImpact 6, you can use the navigator in the lower right hand corner of the image window to navigate the view. Older versions use the scroll bars.
  6. The tools you will be working with are the Retouch Tools. You can open the retouch tools by going to View > Toolbars & Panels, or by selecting them from the pop-out menu on the main toolbar.
  7. To whiten teeth, choose the Dodge tool. Set the level to 100 and the soft edge to 50. Set the brush size slightly smaller than the teeth, and carefully paint over the teeth to lighten them.
  8. To remove red eye, choose the Remove Red-Eye tool. Choose one of the presets and adjust the brush size. Paint over the red areas in the eye until the red is gone.
  9. To remove wrinkles and smooth skin, choose the Blur tool and select the Slight Blur preset from the attribute bar. Vary the brush size as needed and take care to avoid areas of fine detail.

Tips:

  1. Keep refering to the zoomed out view so you don't overdo it.
  2. The Clone-Paintbrush tool can be used for very obvious scars and blemishes.
  3. The mode button on the attribute bar will allow the effect to be applied as an object. This can allow you to refine the effect and make adustments since you won't be applying the effects directly to the base image.
  4. Don't try to remove red eye by painting over or darkening the red area, because it will also paint over the glistening highlights in the eyes and cause them to look hollow and lifeless.
