About the Photo Art
This is a rendering of Tom Bishop, a friend of mine, who is an "out rider" at the Foxfield steeplechase races in Charlottsville, VA.
Software and Techniques Used
Software: I use Photoshop CS5 to develop the photo and get the color, tone and saturation I like and Painter 11 to render the painterly image.
There's no other software that has the extensive inventory of brushes, media and canvases as Painter. With a Wacom tablet and pressure sensitive pen, an artist can create works that defy the viewer to tell that your work was not created with traditional, non-digital means.
I use Painter in clone mode to create brush strokes from image in layer below.
Advice
- I find that the starting photograph must provide the foundation for what you're trying to achieve. The emotion and/or interest comes from this and is flavored or enhanced with the software.
- I find it easier to get the basic look I want with Photoshop and plug-ins from NIC and OnOne.
- When this is done I import to Painter 11 and create the strokes and painterly effects as well as selecting the medium and media.
- I finish off by returning the image to Photoshop and using PhotoFrame (OnOne) or frame creating actions from the Digital Photography Connection (Michael Rather).
