About the Digital Painting

The drawing was based on a PhotoBooth photo but not traced (traced photos are almost always bad drawings). I did this on a Saturday morning.

Tools and Techniques Used

I use a Pogo stylus because my fingers are a bit large. I tried a lot of apps but settled with Brushes for iPhone because it is such a well designed app: since the last two upgrades or so the resolution of the canvas is better and my my brushstrokes are smoother. I love the brushes viewer on my iMac to render my drawings in a higher resolution (in the past I did the same with Painter).

This drawing is made on three layers: the white blank one created by the app (and left untouched), a sketch layer for my pencil work: first a sketch in black with low opacity settings to draw the main areas, second a opaque black pencil to draw the details zoomed-in.

The colour was penciled on a new layer placed beneath my pencil sketch: I used the old technique of placing the darkest colour first and highlighting next in a couple of reworks.

Advice

  • draw everything you can see
  • use the limitations of your software and hardware to your advantage

What do you enjoy about digital finger painting?

You don't have to wait for your device to start, you can draw everywhere. The limitations of the software are a nice way to focus on your drawing and not on the software.

I work as a graphic designer and technical assistant on a small graphic design bureau in the Netherlands. I graduated as a graphic artist but could not making a living with art itself: I still do expositions and continue to refine my own art as can be seen on http://www.eelcokunst.nl
