About the Digital Painting

These finger paintings were created using the Inspire app on an iPod touch.

Tools and Techniques Used

Inspire does not offer a layers feature, but you can import photos to use as the basis for you painting. That is how I did the portrait of my dog Drifter. I imported a photo and then just pained over it using a dry brush, to make it look like it was painted.

The second image is an unfinished doodle I painted using a combination of wet brushes and then dry brush for blending. I really like the realistic quality of the brushes in the Inspire app. It just feels more organic than a lot of the other touch screen painting apps I've used.

Advice

  • Inspire does not offer a layers feature, but you can duplicate your painting as you work. This can help if you decide you want to go back to an earlier version or take the painting in a new direction while leaving the original to revisit later.
  • Working without layers can be a good challenge to get you thinking of new ways to approach a painting.
  • Get the desktop exporter, which runs on your PC or Mac and allows you to export your paintings to higher resolution files.
  • Give your device a quick shake to swap between a wet and dry brush while painting.
