Paths and node editing used to be primarily restricted to the domain of vector-based drawing software. But more and more painting and photo editing programs are introducing vector-based drawing tools for their flexibility and and resolution-independent nature. Whether working with curves and paths and vector-based shapes in painting or drawing software, it is helpful to understand some of the terminology used for this type of computer drawing. Get to know paths, Bezier curves, spline curves, nodes, and handles.

Vector Defined
A brief definition of vector graphics.

The Facts About Vector Images
Vector images are made up of many individual, scalable objects. These objects are defined by mathematical equations rather than pixels, so they always render at the highest quality.

Path
The path is an essential element in any vector object. You can't have objects without paths. Paths are also useful for creating masks and text effects.

Bezier Curve
Most graphics software offers a tool for creating paths with Bezier curves.

Spline or B-Spline Curve
Less common than Bezier curves, some graphics software may offer tools for drawing this type of curve.

Handles
Handles give you something to grab on to! You wouldn't get very far in graphics editing without these.

Nodes
Nodes or anchor points are the fundemental in path editing. Get to know the various types of nodes including symmetrical, smooth, cusp and tangent nodes.

Control Handles
Control handles or direction handles work hand-in-hand with nodes.
