Free tools for capturing screen shots in Windows. Most of these offer extended features beyond the standard print screen key capture built in to Windows.

Greenshot is a free and open-source screen capture application for Windows users. Greenshot makes it very easy to take a screen capture and then draw and annotate upon it without having to open another application.

Capture a Screen Shot with the Snipping Tool in Windows Vista
Before Windows Vista, if you wanted a screen shot you had to use the less than intuitive method of pressing the print screen key and pasting the screen shot into a graphics program to add markup and save it. With Windows Vista, Microsoft has included a utility called the Snipping Tool to make capturing screen shots easier.

Cropper (Win)
Cropper is a pretty nifty free screen capture tool I came across recently. When you run it from a keyboard shortcut or the tray icon, it puts a floating transparent box on your screen which you can move freely and resize by dragging the corner. Move the frame around the screen and simply double click to capture the area under the box.

Windows Vista Snipping Tool
The Snipping Tool utility in Windows Vista is a better option than the Windows Print Screen method of screen captures.
