When you view the complete metadata, you will be able see every detail that has been stored about a photo. The information is divided into several categories that you can expand or collapse as needed. You will rarely need to see complete metadata, but at times it can be useful. The metadata categories include:
- File Properties: This is standard file information such as date created, date modified, width, height, file size, resolution, color mode, etc.
- IPTC: IPTC stands for International Press Telecommunications Council which is the organization that developed a standard set of fields for storing information about photos such as keywords, description, copyright information, and so on. Photoshop Elements uses the Keywords and Description IPTC fields for storing tag information and captions. However, tags and captions aren't automatically written to the IPTC fields until your export or email your photos, or when you use thew File > Write Tag Info to Files command.
- Camera Data (Exif): In my screen shot, the Camera Data (Exif) category is collapsed. This category generally contains the most information--much more than what is shown in the brief metadata view.
- GPS: (Global Positioning System) Some new cameras and camera phones can store geographical GPS data about where a photo was taken.
- Camera Raw: Only used with cameras that shoot in Raw format.
- Edit History: Only used for images edited in Photoshop when the History Logging feature is enabled.
