Another enhancement in Photoshop CS2 is the addition of smart guides and the ability to select multiple layers with the mouse instead of going to the layers palette. This may sound like a tiny thing, but it makes a huge impact on productivity. I imagine it's one of those things you just get used to and don't realize how much time it saves you suddenly have to work without it. Smart guides are shown in the screen shot above. In this example, I selected the lower middle heart to move, and the smart guides appear, allowing me to place it in perfect alignment with the other objects, without needing to use the options bar alignment buttons.

No longer do you need to link layers to act on several layers at once. You can select multiple layers by shift-clicking with the move tool as long as the "auto select groups" option is on. This resulted in some potentially confusing changes in the layer menu. The former "Group with previous" command is now "Create clipping mask." When you select multiple layers, they become a temporary "group" but you can put them in a permanent group using the "Group Layers" command. These layer groups are what were previously referred to as layer "sets." And for backward compatibility, the "Link Layers" command is still there, although I can't imagine many uses for it anymore. In addition, three new layer-related commands now appear in the Select menu: Select All Layers, Deselect Layers, and Select Similar Layers.
