Smart Sharpen is available under the Filters > Sharpen submenu. Smart Sharpen was developed to improve sharpening of edge details, shadows, and highlights, compared to the standard Unsharp Mask filter.
Part of the Smart Sharpen dialog is shown in the animated screen shot above (the image preview is cut out of the screen shot). As you can see it offers fine control over sharpening in the shadow and highlights areas, and you can choose from three different types of blur to remove gaussian blur, motion blur, and lens blur. Smart Sharpen settings can be saved as presets for later use. I found the Smart Sharpen filter gave better results than Unsharp Mask in every image I used it on. In addition, I found it easier to get good results with less tweaking compared to the Unsharp Mask filter. The following pages show several examples and comparisons of the Smart Sharpen filter.
