Sepia Photo Effect in Photo Pos Pro

How to Produce an Antiqued Photo in Photo Pos Pro

From

This tutorial looks at giving a photo an antique sepia effect using the free pixel-based image editor Photo Pos Pro. Photo Pos Pro is quite a powerful image editor though its power can make it a little awkward to get to grips with it at times. However this tutorial should help even a complete beginner convert a digital photo into an antique sepia photo using Photo Pos Pro.

It also shows how the Advanced option in the sepia tool in Photo Pos Pro can be used to produce some different effects.

1. Select an Image

This technique can be used with any type of photo and it can be especially useful for making otherwise slightly dull images a little more interesting to look at.

When you've decided which image to use, go to File > Open and then navigate to the photo and click the Open button.

2. To Go Auto or Not To Go Auto

Converting a photo to sepia using Photo Pos Pro is very easy and the application offers a fully automatic option and a more advanced option that offers greater control over the finished effect.

To use the automatic conversion, go to Effects > Colors > Sepia > Auto and the image will automatically apply an antique sepia effect to the photo. You may be happy with this result, but using the Advanced option allows you to produce alternative final results.

3. Going Advanced

The Advanced option is an easy and intuitive tool and there is nothing to be sacred of from this tool. If you've already applied the Auto option, just go to Edit > Undo before trying this step.

Go to Effects > Colors > Sepia > Advanced to open the Sepia dialog. There are three slider controls in the Properties section that you can adjust to vary the final antique sepia photo effect, these being Tint, Level and Contrast. The Tint slider adjusts the color that is applied, from a purple shade to a red shade, while the Level slider varies the intensity at which the color is applied. The Contrast slider is self-explanatory and the best advice I can offer is to try the different settings to see which results you prefer most.

4. Advanced Options – Blending Modes

While the Advanced option is designed to apply an antique sepia effect to a photograph, the Advanced section of the tool offers some further options that can produce other effects.

The Blend Mode drop down offers a number of options that vary from applying subtle changes to the sepia effect through to more dramatic effects, such as the Midtone option shown in the image, and these should be used with some care.

5. Advanced Options – Opacity

The Opacity option produces a quite different antique sepia photograph effect, by allowing the original image to show through to varying degrees.

The Opacity slider is in the Advanced section of the Sepia dialog and can be dragged to the left to reduce the opacity of the sepia effect. By allowing some of the original color to show through, the effect looks more like a more modern photograph that has faded over time.

6. Conclusion

Photo Pos Pro makes it very easy for anyone to apply an antique sepia effect to any photo, particularly with the Auto option, but by using the Advanced option, it is possible to produce a wider range of results, some of which are not traditional antique sepia photo style effects.
