Changing Blend Modes to Create a Dreamy Effect

Any new layer you create or paste into the Layer palette will be a Normal layer by default. You can change the Blend mode of any layer, with the exception of a Background layer by clicking on Blend Mode field in the right hand pane of the Layers Palette to activate the Blend Mode dropdown.

Most of the blend modes are more suited to special effects or regular graphics than to straight photography but some can be used to enhance images and add a little flare to a photo. One of my favourite methods is to use a blend mode layer to give a photo a soft dreamy appearance.

Note: This technique can be adapted for use in other photo editing software that supports blend modes.
