Adding Text Using Animation Shop Tools

add text
The Text tool is used to add non-animated text to a frame. You can only add text one frame at a time. All text must be in the exact same position in each frame or it will bounce and blink in an unattractive way! (Of course, you could plan for the text to be animated, but that is different than our goal today!)

Onionskin Preview will help us with alignment. It's like laying a piece of tracing paper over an image to see how it aligns with another image.

Select the text color you want to use from the Color Palette.

Select the Text tool and click in the first frame. The Add Text dialog box will appear to select your font, font size, and other options. Type your name where it says 'enter text here' and click OK. The text will stay 'attached' to your cursor until you click again in the frame. Move text to the desired position before clicking.

Next, turn on Onionskin Preview by clicking the yellow Onionskin button on the toolbar (or Shift O). Click again to turn it off. In Frame 2 you will see a temporary 'ghost' or faint image of the text you entered in Frame 1.

Use Zoom tool to enlarge image - it'll help you see to align text.

Add text by clicking in Frame 2, hit OK in the dialog box without changing any text options. Position text in Frame 2 over the ghost of Frame 1 text. Be precise - being off by 1 pixel can make the text look jumpy when animated! Continue adding the same text to all frames by repeating this step.

Jump to Step 9 to crop and finish your animation.
