There are lots of ways to do this… You can choose Select None from the Selections menu or, with the Selection Tool active, right click to deselect, or you can click the Select None icon shown below (all toolbars can be customized, so you may or may not have this particular tool icon visible) or you can use keyboard: Ctrl-D.
