To add additional texture use the FX-Shattered brush variant keep the brush tip size small for best results.

In the example, I worked from light to dark, developing my tonal values as I worked through the painting. Strokes work well from left to right or right to left , basically back and forth filling in as you work to the base of the tree.

This is where it gets intuitive, just let your muse take you where it will...think about evergreens in the sun, how the light dances off them and how the shadows are lay hidden beneath the branches. Make sure that you have a nice representation of light and dark values in the tree.
