Step 3. Draw an ellipse for the brim of the hat and go to Object > Arrange > Send to back to send it behind the peak of the hat. Fill both pieces of the hat with a gray to black gradient. This is the gradient I used. Add a new stop by clicking under the gradient ramp. Change a color of a gradient stop by mixing a new color and dragging the swatch onto it, then move the gradient stops to distribute the colors.
