I sometimes hand-draw my images using a graphic tablet, which easily puts them into my computer. But, there are times when I like to sketch on paper. I made this sketch on paper, for example, while studying a sketch made by Van Gogh. I then scanned the sketch into my computer. In this tutorial, I will use Illustrator to turn the scanned sketch into a vector graphic, then add color to it. I'll be using Illustrator CS6, but any recent version of Illustrator should work. When done, I'll have a color graphic that's easily resizable for use in a variety of computer generated projects.

To follow along in this tutorial, you can either scan into your computer a sketch of your own, or right click on the below link to download a practice file.
