Step 5 . Go to Object > Expand and accept the defaults by clicking OK in the Expand options dialog. When you do so, it will change the fill to Ash and the stroke to none. Press Shift + X to swap the stroke and fill; you should now see the stroke as Ash and the fill as none. Set the fill to the black/white gradient in the Swatches palette, and if necessary, in the Gradient palette set the direction of the gradient to 90°.
