Using Extractions in Digital Layouts: Multiple Extractions

Multiple Extractions

©Bonnie Covel, created in Photoshop 7

For this, I used a single extraction of each person, then overlapped them on the layout. The tricky part in a layout like this, is getting the proportions of each individual extraction right. In other words, I don't want the dog to be bigger than the people, or the dad to be smaller than the kids.

Other extractions shown here are the glasses as an element for part of the title, and the glasses on the dog, the man, and the girl on the shirt.

These extractions each have a feather (in PS Choose Select > Feather) of 1 in place, but for a dreamy look, experiment with higher feather values. Also experiment with different layer styles to add shadows, strokes, and bevels (in PS Choose Layer > Layer Style).
