Corel Quicksort is a free photo management tool available for Windows and Apple Mac OS X. Corel produce a range of graphics and photo software, mostly on a commercial basis, but this is a simple freebie designed to do a very basic job.

Corel have realized that with digital cameras and camera phones, we now have the potential to easily and cheaply produce large numbers of photos. While this should ensure that we always have photos to help us remember occasions, in practice the large volume of photos that we take can mean that we never take the time to look through them and share them. As a result, often photos can get over written without ever being viewed by anyone other than at the moment they were taken.

The simple aim of Corel Quicksort is to make it very easy to view batches of photos and separate out the best for sharing with family and friends or to copy to a new folder on your PC.

Highlights of Corel Quicksort

Corel Quicksort is a very focused application with a few features of note.

  • Free to download with no requirement for registration first
  • Available for Windows and OS X computers
  • Very clear and user friendly interface
  • Simple system encourages you to quickly find the best photos
  • Share your photos directly to your Facebook page

Why Use Corel Quicksort?

Corel Quicksort would be a very useful app for anyone who regularly takes digital photos but finds that they rarely do anything with them. By encouraging you to view all the photos in a folder and filter them as you go through, the process of finding your best photos is simplified nicely.

You can select each image as you view them and assign them to 'stacks' for the best photos and for good photos, or separate poor images and dump them in the trash. You can then easily empty the trash and delete the unwanted files from your computer to free up space. This should help even the most lax of us to maintain a better house keeping regime and stop our hard drives become clogged with huge numbers of poor quality and unwanted photos that will never be viewed by anyone.

Corel Quicksort's aim of helping you to make the most of your digital photos is further helped by the inbuilt function to upload your photos to your Facebook page. This small feature just makes it very easy to share your photos, meaning that they see the light of day rather than being overwritten to free disk space or sitting forgotten on your hard drive.

Limitations of Corel Quicksort

As with most other focused applications that perform quite a specific task, there is little to complain about with Corel Quicksort. It's designed to make a very specific task as easy and straightforward as possible and it achieves this very well.

One aspect that would make the app even more useful would be the inclusion of some simple image adjustment tools. I'm not suggesting turning it into a full blown photo editor, however being able to rotate and crop digital photos would add a much greater degree of flexibility, particularly as the app includes the ability to upload photos to Facebook as part of the workflow. Simple brightness and contrast controls would be desirable too.

Help and Support

The simple and intuitive user interface makes this an app that is very easy to get to grips with. However, this is supported by well presented help information that is accessed by clicking the question mark icon in the top right of the application window. This opens a new column on the right hand side of the window that presents help information dependent on which aspect of the application that you're working in. All in all, there should be more than sufficient help to ensure that all users are able to make the most of Corel Quicksort.
