The options presented for the bitmap export will include color mode, resolution, size, etc. Make sure that the ratio of 1:1 is selected under 'size', resolution is 300 dpi, and the color mode is appropriate for the job - the various options are shown in the screenshot above.

You can then open the TIF in your image editor, make your changes and resave it as a TIF (which is a non-lossy image format). Edited TIFs can be placed back into Word docs or a layout application without problems, and although they will be a much larger file size than JPGs, they will be better quality than an edited JPG.
