“Browse the work of the talented members of our Graphics Software community... presenting the results of the first Creative Composite Challenge.”

Recently I put out a challenge to the talented members of our graphics software community. The challenge was to create a composite image and post the results to the forum. The challenge was not a contest or competition, it's simply a fun project allowing you to experiment and learn more about your graphics software. By sharing the results of the challenge in the forum, members were able to learn not only from their own experimentation, but also by seeing other's work, asking questions, and sharing techniques.

These are the guidelines of the challenge as presented in the original forum post:

  • Create a composite image using any software and any images.
  • Post your composite in the forum.
  • Tell us what software you used, and explain some of the techniques you used.
  • Tell us what the biggest challenge was in creating your image.
  • Tell us what you learned from this challenge.

We saw some fabulous results from our creative members using a wide variety of software programs. I thought would be a shame to keep these results hidden away in the forum, so I've selected several of the submissions and compiled them here for easier browsing. Keep in mind that these are just a sampling of the images contributed, so be sure to visit the forum to see all the projects. The images here are scaled down or cropped thumbnails of the original work. For each image I've included a few comments from the creator of the image. By clicking on a thumbnail image below you will be taken to the forum where you can see a larger version of the complete image along with the full text of the accompanying message. Feel free to add your own contributions or post your questions and comments in the forum.

"I started by making a grid in Freehand, which I then imported into Photoshop as a flat image. I filled the grid spaces with different photos, desaturated each photo and then applied a color layer to the various rows. Once the flat image was built, I imported it into Bryce and applied it as a texture map to a simple globe on a white sky with a reflective white terrain. Finally, I pulled it back to Photoshop for some final tweaking and the addition of text." -Stunned

I had to re-create the glare in the window, remove what was originally shown through the windows. The broad gray lines are actually images of roads that I overlaid. I found an image of a gear and blew out the colors using curves. All the fades are done with masks. All the text was imported form Illustrator. I did masked out truck, it was originally on a cover of a magazine. I also did some touch-ups on the truck itself. The fire was a stock image. I was going for a very dark feel to it." -Adam

"The only real challenge was restoring the old photo, using PhotoImpact. I first posed my grandson by sitting in a chair and having him stand as seen in the photo. Then I removed myself and put the older gentleman in my place.

"It's a real conversation piece in our genealogy group." -Aberdean

"Used three layers and three programs. The landscape was done with Terragen. The foreground and easel was done in Bryce4. The canvas was taken from the background and had a "painterly" filter added to it in Photo-Paint." -FROGDOT
