Adding Text in PI 4.2

The popularity of PhotoImpact has really started to grow recently, as people are discovering the flexibility and features of the program. This series of mini-tutorials is meant to show the beginning user how to use the basic functions of PI. Please bear in mind that these mini-tutorials are extremely basic. PI can do much more than just these basic functions, but those are best explained in more advanced full tutorials.

This mini-tutorial will show how to add text to an image and the different functions of the text tool.

1. Open a new file, any size, any background color. you probably won't want to accept the default size the PI gives you of 640x480, since I have found this is to big for my screen. I work on two different computers to test my web pages, one at 800x600 on a 17" monitor and one at 640x480 on a 14" monitor. I usually work on a 600x400 size image or a 500x300 size image, depending on the computer.

2. Select your text tool Text Button. Click on your image to bring up the text entry box.

3. Type your text in the box, and click update. You can change the font, size and color on the attribute bar. The update button will apply any changes you have made to the text, and the ok button will set the text.

Text Entry Box

Text Style BoxThe options button opens a drop down box where you can select many different options, including to use bold, italics, or to just show the outline. You can also have the computer automatically add a drop shadow on this step.

The final box, "Mode", defines how your text will appear when created. I usually use 2d text, since it is the quickest to show changes. This box can also be used to apply various effects. We will discuss this box in other tutorials.

Now, click ok to set your text. It is an object, so you can use your cursor to place it where you want it. That's all it takes to add text.
