Creating a Glass Ball with PI's Path Tool

1. Open a new image. I am using an image 200x200 with a white background. Then using your selection tool set to circle, with the options "draw from center" and "antialias" checked, draw a cirle on your background. Hint - I like to start at 100x100 so I can easily redraw if I have to.

2. Select your fill tool, with a radial gradient. Set your foreground color to the color you want to use and the background color to black.

Select the Radial Gradient
Foreground your color, background black.

4. Fill with the gradient. Your image should look like the following image. If you aren't satisfied, click undo and adjust the size of your gradient until you get the desired effect.

Partway done!

5. Go to Edit-->Selection-->Expand/Shrink. Expand your selection 1-2 pixels, with the "circle" shape chosen.

6. Go to Edit-->Trace-->Selection Marquee. Keep the default settings and click OK. This will turn your selection into a path to play with.

Choose 3D Round7. From the drop down menu on the attributes bar (which should currently say "path", choose "3D Round".

8. On your Easy Pallete, choose the far left box, and select "Material Gallery" from the drop down list.

select Materal Gallery

9. Go to the far right tab labeled "Presets". Select the first one "Remove Material." This should make your image a dull gray sphere. Now, go through your presets until you find one labeled "Glass w/Shadow." Double click to apply it, or drag and drop it onto your image. On your attributes toolbar, click on the "options box." Check your border width to make sure it is large enough that your circle isn't flat.

Make sure your border size is big enough

Ball with Shadow10. Right click and merge your images. You know have a nice glass ball with a slight drop shadow.

Ball without Shadow11. To remove the drop shadow, use your selection tool set to circle, draw from center, antialias on, and start at 100x100 (or wherever you started your circle originally, and select what you want. Crop.

Now let's make one without filters -->
