See-Thru Text with Layer Styles
Software Used: Photoshop 6.0 or 7.0

Using layer styles in Photoshop 6 or 7 we can create a very quick and easy transparent or see-through type effect. By saving the style, you can apply the effect with one click. Here's how...

1.) Create a new document.

2.) Click the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" button on the layers palette. Then choose "Pattern" from the menu.

3.) Pick a pattern from those offered in the pattern fill dialog and click ok to create a new fill layer.

4.) Type D to set the foreground color to white.

5.) Select type tool and add some text to your document. Don't apply a layer style to the type.

6.) Use the move tool to position and size your type.

7.) Double-click a blank spot in the layer palette for the type layer you just added. This is will bring up the Layer Style dialog.

8.) Click on "Blending Options" and change the Blend Mode to Multiply. (The type will temporarily disappear.)

9.) Click on "Drop Shadow" and adjust the settings to your liking.

10.) Click on "Bevel and Emboss" and adjust the settings to your liking.

11.) Optional: Click the "New Style" button if you want to save this style for future use. In the new style dialog, give the style a name and make sure "Include Layer Effects" and "Include Layer Blending Options" are both checked. The saved style will appear at the end of the Style palette. When you use the layer style in the future, remember you'll need to use white as the type color.

12.) Click OK to accept the layer styles you just applied.

Note that the type and effects remain completely editable. You can double click the T in the layer palette to select the text and type a different word or phrase. You can also modify the bevel and shadow effects if you decide they need to be changed. If you edit the size of the type, you will probably need to scale the layer style effects.
