Animated Robo Dancer - Page 2
Paint Shop Pro Tutorial by Arizona Kate

(If you arrived on this page from a search, you should begin the tutorial from page one.)

STEP 2...LET'S DANCE

Create a new layer. Name this layer 'o'. To create a new layer:   Right click, select 'new raster layer' or hit the 'Create Layer' icon below the word 'Layer' on the Layer Palette. The Layer Properties dialog box will pop up so you can type in the layer name.

On this new layer, use the Text Tool to select Mr Robo Funk 'o' with the same settings as above! Position Mr 'o' so the foot closest to the 'floor' is close to the same foot on the 'FEET DOWN' layer.

Create a new layer ...name this layer 'x'. Use the Text Tool to select Mr Robo Funk 'x' Position 'x' so foot aligns with the other layers.

Duplicate 'o' layer. Right click the 'o' layer button, select DUPLICATE. Drag the 'Copy of o' layer button to the top (above x).

Duplicate FEET DOWN layer. Drag the 'Copy of FEET DOWN' layer button to the top.

Are you confused yet? LOL Here's a screenshot of how my Layer Palette looks so far. Is yours the same?

PSP7 layer palette
PSP 7 LAYER PALETTE
PSP8 layer palette
PSP 8 LAYER PALETTE

And this is a screenshot of how this image will look when we finish adding more and more layers. Really confusing, huh? So...from this point on, we'll start turning off layer visibility so we can see what the heck we're doing!

Use the Visibility buttons on the Layer Palette to make contents of layer visible or invisible. These items remain in the image but are hidden.... click to turn off, click again to turn back on.

For PSP 7, the visibility button is the 'eyeglasses' next to each layer button.
For PSP 8, the visibility button is the 'eye' next to each layer button.
If you don't see these icons, grab and drag the edge of the Layer Palette to make it wider and show more of the Palette.

At this point, turn off visibility for all layers except the top layer (Copy of FEET DOWN).

layer visibility

This might be a good time to SAVE if you haven't already! Save in .psp file format. Animation Shop does not recognize the new .pspimage format, so PSP 8 users must change the 'save as type' information in the dialog box.

Create new layer at top and name this layer 'p' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'p' so his foot aligns with the FEET DOWN layer. Turn off visibility for all layers except the new layer.

Create new layer at top and name this layer 'w' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'w' so his foot aligns with previous layer.

In ALL the following steps...turn off visibility for all layers except the top 2 layers that you are working with.

Create new layer at top and name this layer 'p' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'p' so his foot aligns with previous layer.

You should now have 8 layers! If that's enough dancing for you, jump to STEP 3 (Message Card).

This is how you're animation would look if you stopped adding layers at this point!

However, if you think Mr Robo Funk is ready for a few more dance steps...let's add some more layers!

Let's continue with more dance steps!

  • Duplicate 'FEET DOWN' layer. Drag the 'Copy of FEET DOWN' layer button to the top.
  • Create new layer at top and name this layer 'g' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'g' so feet are inline with previous layer.
  • Remember, after every step...turn off visibility for all layers except the top 2 layers.
  • Create new layer at top and name this layer 'y' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'y' so one foot aligns with previous layer (his right, your left).
  • Duplicate 'FEET DOWN' layer. Drag the 'Copy of FEET DOWN' layer button to the top.
  • Create new layer at top and name this layer 'y' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'y' with eyeballs aligned.
  • Create new layer at top and name this layer 'g' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'g' so bottom foot is on top of same foot in previous layer.
  • Create new layer at top and name this layer 'z' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'z' so one foot aligns with previous layer (his left, your right).
  • Duplicate 'FEET DOWN' layer. Drag the 'Copy of FEET DOWN' layer button to the top.
  • Create new layer at top and name this layer 'z' ...use the Text Tool to place Mr Robo Funk 'z' with eyeballs aligned with previous layer.

SAVE!!

If you are an advanced user, I challenge you to create even more dance steps from some of the other letters in Mr Robo Funk!
