Both Camtasia and HyperCam will do a very good job in capturing information from the computer screen and outputting into various computer formats. Besides .avi format VFramer gives the option of turning movies into Windows Media, RealTime, or QuickTime movies. Camtasia options include RealTime, Windows Media and optimized ASF.

Although Camtasia is more expensive than the HyperCam/Vframer combo, the main difference I found was the amount of assistance each company supplied for the user. For the novice user Techsmith includes .avi movies to get the user started and its web pages are include additional help, while HyperCam and VFramer would be more difficult for a user who has never tried this type of software before.

The system requirements for Camtasia and HyperCam/VFramer are: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98 (or later), a pointing device, sound card, a microphone, and the standard Windows multimedia system software.

Camtasia's suggested retail price is US$149.95 and it includes free on-line upgrades to the next two major releases.

HyperCam is available alone for US$30 for a single copy. Site licenses are also available. If purchased in conjunction with VFramer through the Hyperion website, the cost would be US$109.95 giving the purchaser a savings of $10 on HyperCam.
