Hiker Hi there -
Hiker is our Guest here yet?
SueC Hi Lioness
SueC Hiker, no, Greg's not here yet
Hiker ok, thanks
SueC Expected any time tho :-)
............................ Jean joined.............
SueC Hi Jean
lioness Type HERENow I see how to do this - first chat room I have been in . Hi to you all.
Jean Type HEREHello
lioness Actually, unless there is another Jean - I am both Jean and lioness - I thought a nickname was required. Let's just call me jean
SueC Did you all come up with some good questions to ask Greg?
SueC Ok Jean. :-)
lioness "Why are you late????"
............................ Greg joined.............
SueC Hi Greg
lioness Welcome guru.
Greg hello
RandyHOST Hi Greg
Greg Just 4 minutes late today - no I wasn't shooting iris!
RandyHOST LOL
............................ ATHiker joined.............
Greg So who is here -- looks like a lioness! :-)
lioness yep
Greg mewow to you!
............................ Schwartzie joined.............
lioness this looks like a party to me
Greg Any topics of interest?
SueC Hi Schwartzie and ATHiker
Schwartzie hi
Greg Where do you hike AT?
SueC Greg, I have to say you insipred me after the last chat.
ATHiker I've hiked from GA to NH
Greg Great-does that mean that you have an image to share?
ATHiker wife and I did the trail in '95
Greg Wow! Took pictures all the time, I'll bet
ATHiker yes, actually was recently capturing some small still images from my video camera
SueC Well, there's a few I put in my latest article
ATHiker using Zipshot, a product made by ArcSoft
Greg What, no camera?
Greg So, you must have missed the bears!
ATHiker took a camera in '95 - went back and hiked some more in '97 and took the video camera then (only for a few weeks)
ATHiker used a Canon A2E for most of the hike
Greg So, do you have some of the video posted online anywhere?
Greg That is what I use--great camera, heh?
RandyHOST 1N is better
Greg So, lioness--do you have any images to share?
............................ ATHiker left.............
lioness Just here to learn - I'm going to be very quiet tonight
Greg Anyone here have a particularly good way to enhance an image?
............................ Hiker left.............
RandyHOST Extensis Intellihance
Greg I spent part of my day trying to make an image look like a watercolor
Greg Intellihance is a good tool - saves having to know lots about Photoshop
RandyHOST yeppers :-)
lioness What are the advantages of Ext Intel?
Greg It is a tool that lets you click and change your image into a better image
SueC Has anyone here tried AutoFX AutoEye and had success with it?
Greg You can lighten, darken, focus, change contrast etc all in a single click
Schwartzie i have it
lioness Sounds easy
RandyHOST it is
Schwartzie I find I can do better with other things
Greg Actually, I think AutoFX produces better results than Intellihance - just doesn't offer as much control
............................ Doreen left.............
SueC AutoEye seems to make all my images look worse... it really brings out the JPEG artifacts... maybe I need to read the instructions.
RandyHOST what "other things" ?
Greg It all depends on how you set it up I guess
Greg AutoEye has a pre-set filter for digital camera-taken images that works great
Greg sometimes anyway!
SueC I'm using the default settings... I'll have to explore the other presets
Greg I see a Jean here- do you use a digital camera?
............................ Doreen joined.............
Jean have one - not very good with it yet :)
lioness Jean and lioness are one and the same - I thought I was required to use a nickname also.
Greg If you can wait a minute, I'll post an image I did today - just have to reduce it quickly
Schwartzie other things...photoshop mainly and intellahance
lioness Oh, good, there is a Jean. Hi Jean.
Jean This Jean is not Lioness :)
Greg Actually, the lioness is a jean also - say hi "jean"
RandyHOST I kinda figured that LOL
lioness Hi Jean
Jean Hi Jean
Greg Sue, can't send a pic - gotta have one posted to a site--is that correct?
SueC Right Greg
Greg That'll add a minute
Greg ok here is the url
Greg Sue you can explain how they can look at it as i type it correctly i hope
lioness I was hoping someone would do that.
Greg www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/truck-final.jpg
SueC Yep... just hit the surf button and it'll take you there...
RandyHOST not there
SueC oops, that only works with the http in front
SueC http://www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/truck-final.jpg
RandyHOST not there
Schwartzie i get a 404 on it
SueC yep, me too
............................ Doreen left.............
lioness I'm trying to bring up a truck in a pasture in your gallery.
............................Greg left.............
SueC uh oh
lioness He must be trying to find that truck. He knows he has it somewhere.
............................ Greg joined.............
SueC We're dying to see this truck Greg <g>
Greg I love my DSL Internet service when it works! Sorry
Greg Did anyone see it?
SueC http://www.reallyusefulpage.com/dcs/gallery-images/de29.jpg <--- gorgeous!
lioness I'll try again
SueC Nope, Greg... it gave us 404 errors
Greg I think it looks like a pig nose- what do you think?
RandyHOST yep *S* *L*
SueC LOL... well, now that you mention it
Schwartzie hmmm it sure does, LOL
............................ ATHiker95 joined.............
Greg www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/truck-final.JPG
SueC WB, Hiker
RandyHOST welcome back
Greg GOTTA have the jpg look like JPG
ATHiker95 thank you - I only have 1 phone line - phone rang. LOL
lioness Why did I get an orchid?????
lioness It is a beautifyl orchid
Greg put your cursor on the line i posted with the truck-final line and click on the Surf! button
SueC http://www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/truck-final.JPG Try it now.
Greg That is one Sue found
Greg Anyone got it--i did
Greg I shot it near Charleston SC this weekend - old fire truck and a utility truck
SueC I had to copy and paste it. Must be too many browser windows open
Greg then i ran all kinds of filters on it
RandyHOST kinda slow with a slow connect
............................ graphicssoftADM left.............
............................ penbob joined.............
Greg Yes, it is a big file so you can see it - often when you jpg compress an image too much and it is too small you cant see what was done to it
Greg Hi PenBob
Greg Anyone get it yet?
RandyHOST YES
SueC Yep, got it now :-)
Greg How bout you lioness and Jean?
SueC PenBob, we're looking at http://www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/truck-final.JPG
Greg I'll have all the details of how I created it and another one on my web site tomorrow - it is this evenings work for a paper company
lioness my cursor is misbehaving
penbob Type HEREHello Greg! I was reading last week's chat and looked at the "closeup" shots you referred to. They are wonderful! I'd sure like to see the iris pics you metnioned. Any hope of that?
Greg wack it once!
Greg Yes, I was very busy this week and this evening so i didnt get it posted - i'll do it now if you'd like
Greg Should I take a few mintues?
penbob Sorry, but I don't know how to view the site you're looking at. Do I use the "Surf" button? Thanks for your help.
SueC That should do it penbob... if not you'll have to copy paste
Greg just put your cursor on the following line and hit surf
RandyHOST cut-n-paste the URL
Greg www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/truck-final.JPG
penbob Gotcha' Greg. It worked too. LOL
Greg http://www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/flower-ink.jpg
penbob Geez, that's some very good work! You are GOOD! :)
Greg that one is another one from this weekend - it sat on the front porch of a huge home in charleston, sc
ATHiker95 nice pic!
penbob Is the flower pic done digitally? It looks like a watercolor painting.
Jean looks like a painting, Greg
penbob Jean, we're thinking alike. :)
............................ RandyHOST left.............
Schwartzie thats beautiful, would make a nice greeting card
............................ RandyHOST joined.............
penbob Greg, I'd like to know more about your work and how you got into it. Thanks.
penbob Well, since the host has left, does that mean we should too? LOL
Greg www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/p-iris.jpg
RandyHOST yes
ATHiker95 do you still do much work with film Greg or are you deep into digital now?
Greg The reason that I just posted those two iris images is that they were done with film
ATHiker95 was that with a Nikon 950?
Greg You'll see the difference
ATHiker95 oh
Greg both iris are done with my canon a2e and a couple of really good lenses
penbob Thanks for the lovely iris, Greg.
Greg the second iris is
ATHiker95 the 2nd iris is with film or both are?
penbob I only saw one iris. How do I see the 2nd? Thanks.
Greg www.reallyusefulpage.com/pasture/iris-blue.jpg
Schwartzie think i missed one also
Greg the blue one is about 160kb - a big file so you can see how clear a film image is relative to a $1,000 digital camera
Greg anyone get it yet
penbob The blue iris is fantastic!
SueC Yep... wow
Schwartzie yes got it
ATHiker95 ok, which one did you do on film? :)
Greg When I went to charleston, I shot 300 digital images at about 725kb each
Greg I shot three rolls of 24 exposure film
penbob Did you say a $1,000 digital camera?!! WOW!
Greg They are both good for different things
Greg I really like digital because I have been able to learn so very much about photography
Greg plust it is cheap - didn't cost me much more than a dollar
penbob Greg, may I use the Charleston shot on a personal greeting card?
ATHiker95 do you know if Canon is going to come out with any sort of consumer digital that will use my EOS lenses?
Greg the dollar was for the CD that i saved it to
Jean The film images are scanned?
Greg Yes, all my images posted on the really useful site may be used
Schwartzie I used to have a Bronica 2 1/4 that took terrific pics
Greg Good question. I have scanned the film images with a desktop scanner
penbob Many thanks for your generosity.
Schwartzie It was stolen and never replaced it. a new one is 4000$ now
Greg To get even clearer images, I have takent he same iris pictures on slide film
penbob What brand of scanner do you use?
Greg They are wonderful, but getting a scan from film is expensive and I don't have a slide scanner
Greg I have an HP
Greg You really have to spend above $500 to get a good quality scanner for making large prints
ATHiker95 I have a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual but find it difficult to do good scans of slides as many of my slides are fairly saturated and this slide scanner likes very bright pics apparently
penbob I have a Microtek ScanMaker V300 which is sev. yrs. old but works great.
Greg Below that you can get great scans, but they are useful pretty much for online stuff or lower standards than i hvae
Greg some of the older scanners are actually better scanners than the new cheaper scanners
penbob Well, mine is only 32 bit.
Greg Microtek makes a great scanner
Greg I've heard that Hiker
Greg That is lots of money to spend not to get a good scan of a heavily saturated image
ATHiker95 I also didn't have much luck sending some slides in to be scanned onto a Photo CD. Contrast was very low and pics were dim. Took a lot of work to fix them
Greg I would work on your settings - I bet you can do much better
............................ DonS joined.............
Greg If not do more work with Photoshop
penbob I got a new Lexmark Z51 printer and had to uninstall my scanner to install it and then when I reinstalled the scanner, the darn printer wouldn't work. I now have the printer working and not the scanner. And so it goes . . . !
............................ RandyHOST left.............
SueC Welcome Don
............................ RandyHOSTse joined.............
Greg You don't have usb i guess?
Greg Hi Don
............................ RandyHOSTse left.............
DonS Hi, Sorry I'm late. I'll lurk.
Greg Don, you use a digital camera or film or both?
............................ RandyHOST joined.............
DonS Both
RandyHOST bob add another LPT card
Greg When do you use one versus the other
penbob If you're asking me if I have USB. No. I have to piggyback the printer to the scanner.
RandyHOST no get another LPT card
Greg An LPT card might do it if you have an available IRQ - but your life with two parrallel things can get tuff!
RandyHOST not really
DonS Actually, I almost never use my 35 mm cameras since getting a Oly 2000. Probably just because it new and everything.
Greg I love the 2000-it takes clearer pictures than the Nikon950 I use
penbob Are you suggesting I get another LPT card, Randy? I'll do anything to get them both working again. Did great w/my old HP 850 printer.
Greg Just doen't rotate
ATHiker95 greg - do you know of any plans by Canon to come out with a consumer digital camera that will accept EOS lenses? I hate to buy a digital camera only to find out a few weeks later that Canon has produced such an item
Jean you still need something worth scanning :)
RandyHOST yes Bob that is what I was saying....your printer on one the scanner on the other
penbob Thanks for the suggestion, Randy. I'll check into it ASAP.
Greg Hiker, I'm with you. I have six EOS lenses. At a photography show a few months ago, I learned that there will be an awesome digital back for the EOS by Cannon
Greg You may know that Kodak has one already for EOS
RandyHOST no problem....make sure you get/check one the EEC etc....should have info in the printer/scanner manuals
ATHiker95 yes, but it is mucho bucks I believe
Greg Jean - getting something to scan is easy - just take a few pictures and then a few more - you'll learn quickly
Greg Do you have a 35mm?
Greg Hey Lioness, have you received your free camera from ofoto.com yet?
lioness Just got it a couple of days ago - AND, yea! I just found the iris!!
RandyHOST penbob if you run int any problems email me eod@frontiernet.net or swing by the newsgroups I watch over news://news.lockergnome.com
Greg well done
lioness yes, still here - looking for iris
Greg I want you all to know that Lioness is my mother!
Greg She has recently gotten a new computer and is doing wonderful things with it!
lioness Gosh - you blew my cover
RandyHOST cool :-)
ATHiker95 has anyone here tried out the new Casio 3.3 that includes the IBM microdrive?
penbob Randy, I'll be grateful and BTW, I won't have to "run into any problems"; they just come my way. :)
Greg She is just now getting into imaging
SueC Oh, cool... congratualtions Lioness :-)
lioness Thank you very much
lioness Mostly its imagining
Greg Any more questions that we can discuss?
RandyHOST penbob I'll do my best to help you out...and if I don;t have the brain power then the newsgroups will have an answer....I have been working with computers since 1983
SueC Greg, what is the zoom on the Nikon 950?
lioness I'm very grateful - thank you Randy
............................ Jean left.............
Greg 3x plus a couple of software zooms that i don't use
SueC Do you use another lens to get those close-ups?
Greg No., just use the flower setting - not always even zoomed all the way
Greg They are pretty good, I think - can even do a small spider
............................ Jean joined.............
DonS Greg, have you used any aux lenes on the 950?
SueC Wow, that's great
ATHiker95 there's a good photo site at www.worldphotogallery.com if anyone is interested
Greg no - i won't spend anymore money on that camera - they change very rapidly, plus I soon will be writing about computers and no more photography after the next book
Greg have to watch my pennies!
Greg one can spend an uncountable amount on photo toys, right?
Schwartzie what is a good digial camera in the 400$ price range?
SueC Computer toys too :-)
SueC Schwatzie... I just paid $450 for a Nikon Coolpix 800
DonS I seem to. Between PCs and phot gear, the play money goes fast. :-)
Greg I always have a hard time anwering that questions unless i know the person
Greg it all depends
RandyHOST upgrading programs :-/
Schwartzie do you like it?
Greg you can buy lots of $400 cameras that take good pictures
Greg then it is down to many other things
ATHiker95 perhaps Kodak DC280?
Schwartzie I got a Nikon point and shoot that doesnt take very sharp pictures and an older 35mm reflex that needs work done on it
SueC Yep... I knew Nikon had a good reputation, but I'll admit I didn't shop around much
Greg I hate to say something like buy my book, but i cover that question in depth
Greg just look at it at one of the bookstores - it'll give you a good idea how to go about buying a cameraa that will suit you
ATHiker95 http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/photo/index.html - for some really nice photography in case you are interested
SueC You're too modest Greg... I hope you'll tell us a little bit about some of the upcoming projects you're working on
Schwartzie I doubt if it finds its way to bookstores where I live and we dont have any in many miles around :(
............................ penbob left.............
ATHiker95 greg will have to pay you a visit down there Schwartzie. :)
Jean Wonder what Ansel Adams used :)
Greg Where is it you are?
Schwartzie LOL he could find some pretty spots to shoot anyway
Schwartzie Im in the Arkansas Ozarks
ATHiker95 pretty country down there greg - time for a book tour. :)
lioness Would love to see that in the autumn
Greg I'm in Chapel Hill, NC - not all that far
Greg You may all want to watch www.reallyusefulpage.com/tips-techs.index.com
Greg I am putting a series of tips on how to edit the images up
Jean great !
ATHiker95 your book sounds great from perusing the contents - will have to hunt it down in a B&N store somewhere
RandyHOST order it online
Schwartzie wheres the contents? I missed that too
