How To Create a Web Photo Gallery With PhotoImpact Album 5

By Sue Chastain, About.com

PhotoImpact Album is the image cataloging utility included with Ulead PhotoImpact. The Thumbnail > Export command makes it easy to create a photo gallery of thumbnails you can post on the Web.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 15 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Prepare your photos for the Web by rotating, cropping, resizing, and color correcting, if necessary. Refer to the related information in the links below for tips on prepping your pictures.
  2. Choose an empty folder or create a new one to use as a destination folder for the files created by the Photo Gallery command.
  3. Open PhotoImpact Album.
  4. Create a new album and add the photos you'd like to include, or open an existing album if you have already created it.
  5. Type Ctrl-A if you want to include all of the images, or hold the Ctrl key down as you select multiple images to include in the thumbnail index.
  6. Go to Thumbnail > Export > Thumbnails.
  7. In the Page Layout Tab, type a title for the page. This title will appear in the title bar of the Web browser. You can also type an optional header and footer to appear on the page, and choose an optional background image.
  8. Under the output file name, click the browse button [...] and navigate to the folder you created in step 2, then type a filename for the HTML page that will be created.
  9. For thumbnail layout, choose horizontal if you want the thumbnails to go across and down, or vertical if you want them to appear in a row going down the page.
  10. In the Thumbnail tab, choose a size for the thumbnails. Check the index number box if you want a number to appear next to each image.
  11. Choose a prefix that will be appended to the file name for the thumbnail images that are created.
  12. Set the number of rows and colums for how you'd like the thumbnails to be layed out on the page. If additional pages are required, they will be created automatically.
  13. In the Fields tab, you can choose additional information to be included on your HTML page. This information would need to be added to your album prior to exporting the thumbnails.
  14. In the Format tab, you can customize elements of the HTML pages that will be created. Experiment with these options as desired and use the preview button to see the page in your browser as you make changes.
  15. When you're satisfied with the preview, click OK and your pages will be created. If you used the preview button, you may get a message saying the file already exists. Click Yes to overwrite the file.

Tips:

  1. PhotoImpact Album creates HTML pages, thumbnail images, and copies the original full-size files to the same folder.
  2. You can upload the entire destination folder to your Web sever as-is, or open the html pages in a Web page editor to change their appearance.
  3. PhotoImpact Album creates links directly to the full-size images. When you click an image in the thumbnail page, the full-size image will open in the same browser window.
  4. You can include titles, captions, keywords, and other information for each picture by entering the information into PhotoImpact Album in Data Entry Mode (View > Mode > Data Entry).
