If you often have to rename a series of related files -- such as several pictures from a digital camera -- the free image viewer XnView allows you to do this very quickly. Version 1.50 used here.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 2 minutes
Here's How:
- Open XnView
- In the folder panel, navigate to the folder folder containing the files you want to rename.
- Select the group of files to be renamed using one of the following methods.
- Select a range of files by clicking on the first file, then holding the shift key down as you click on the last file.
- Select several individual files by clicking on the first file, then holding the Ctrl key down as you click on additional files.
- Go to Tools > Rename Sequence.
- Enter the codes to rename your files in the Filename Template field. Use the # sign to represent serial numbers. Use the * sign to insert the original file name.
- You must include the extension in the filename template!
- Enter the starting number and the step value.
- The old names and new names are displayed in the dialog box. When you are happy with the preview, click Rename to apply the changes.
Tips:
- Be careful about leaving out the filename extension when composing a template. Be sure all your files are the same type before renaming them. Changing the file to an incorrect extension can cause problems.
- When you use the * sign to insert the original filename in your template, it includes the file extension.
- Remember to pad the serial numbers with leading zeros if you want them to sort properly. Use ### for hundreds of files in the series, #### for thousands.
