If you often have to rename a series of related files -- such as several pictures from a digital camera -- ACDSee 5 allows you to do this very quickly.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 2 minutes
Here's How:
- Open ACDSee
- In the navigation pane, go to folders and navigate to the folder folder containing the files you want to rename.
- Select the group of files to be renamed using one of the following methods.
- Select a range of files by clicking on the first file, then holding the shift key down as you click on the last file.
- Select several individual files by clicking on the first file, then holding the Ctrl key down as you click on additional files.
- Right click within the selected files and choose Batch Rename.
- The batch rename dialog box appears with brief instructions for using the feature. The template fields is already filled in with some information based on the existing file names.
- If you only want to change the filename case, uncheck the template box in the top section and use the menu in the lower section to choose how you want the case changed.
- To change the filenames, check "Use template" and enter the codes to rename your files in the Template field. Use the # sign to represent serial numbers. Use the * sign to insert the original file name.
- Choose whether to use numbers or letters to replace the # signs. Enter the starting number in "Start at:" Usually this will be 1.
- You can include EXIF Metadata in your template with the "Insert EXIF Metadata" button. This will allow you to include the date/time in the filename and other information stored in the file.
- ACDSee shows you a preview of the old name and new name before making any changes, so there is no room for error. When you're happy with the preview, click OK and the files are renamed.
Tips:
- If you enter Christmas_### in the template field, the files will be renamed Christmas_001.jpg, Christmas_002.jpg, and so on.
- If you want to rename your files with the date & time click Insert Exif Metadata > Insert Metadata > Date/time original. The files must have Exif metadata or you may get an error.
- Be sure to check the new filename preview when using Metadata in your filenames. Make sure all new filenames are unique.
- Remember to pad the serial numbers with leading zeros if you want them to sort properly. Use ### for hundreds of files in the series, #### for thousands.
