Many of the commands in Photoshop are dimmed as unavailable. What is wrong?

By Sue Chastain, About.com

Question: Many of the commands in Photoshop are dimmed as unavailable. What is wrong?

Answer: Most likely this is because your images is in a color mode that is not supported by those commands. Many of Photoshop's commands will only work on images in RGB color mode with 8 bits per channel. The Color Mode is indicated in the title bar of your document and can be changed though the Image > Mode submenu.
