Scanning photos from books, magazines and newspapers often results in an unsightly interference pattern called moire. If your scanner doesn't offer descreening, it's not too hard to remove yourself.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 5 Minutes
Here's How:
- Scan the image at a resolution approximately 150-200% higher than what you need for final output.
- In the View menu choose Actual View (1:1)
- Go to Effect > Noise> Remove Moire. If all the pattern is removed, skip to step 6, but chances are it won't be and you can continue to the next step.
- Go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur. If you get a dialog box of quick samples, click Options for the advanced settings. Set the preview to 1:1.
- Start with an amount of .5 and gradually increase the radius until the pattern disappears. Use the preview button and click ok when satisfied. The image will be somewhat blurry.
- Go to Format > Image Size. Make sure the resample box is checked and adjust for the final output resolution.
- After resampling, make sure View is set to 100% zoom (View > Actual).
- Go to Effect > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. If you get a dialog box of quick samples, click Options for the advanced settings. Set the preview to 1:1.
- Exact settings will depend on the image resolution, but these settings are a good starting point: Radius 1-3, Amount 50-100, Threshold 1-5. Click the preview button and use your eye as the final judge.
