Remove Moire Patterns From Scanned Photos in Paint Shop Pro

By Sue Chastain, About.com Guide

Moire Example

Moire example from an image scanned from a newspaper.

Scanning photos from books, magazines and newspapers often results in an unsightly interference pattern called moire. If your scanner doesn't offer descreening, it's not too hard to remove yourself.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
  1. Scan the image at a resolution approximately 150-200% higher than what you need for final output.
  2. In the View menu choose Normal Viewing 1:1
  3. Go to Effects > Enhance Photo > Moire pattern removal.
  4. Increase the fine details number gradually until the pattern is gone.
  5. Use the proof button to preview the changes on the full image.
  6. In the Moire Pattern Removal dialog, zoom out to 1:3.
  7. If you still see patterns or splotches, increase the Remove bands setting until it is diminished. Otherwise, skip to step 9.
  8. Use the proof button to preview the results and adjust if neccessary. Click OK when satisfied.
  9. Go to Image > Resize. Activate the Actual / print size section and adjust the resolution and print size for the desired output. Any remaining pattern should be diminished when the image is resampled.
  10. Go to Effects > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask.
  11. Exact settings will depend on the image resolution, but these settings are a good starting point: Radius 1-3, Strength 50-100, Clipping 1-5. Click the proof button and use your eye as the final judge.
Tips:
  1. You may wish to apply a small amount of Gaussian blur before resampling if there is still any visible pattern after step 7.
