Layer blend modes are a powerful feature of image editing software. Here's a quick and easy way to fix a washed out picture using blend modes in Paint Shop Pro.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 2 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Open the photo.
  2. If the layer palette is not visible, display it by right-clicking on any toolbar and selecting it from the menu.
  3. Right click the background layer, and choose duplicate.
  4. The blend mode for the duplicate layer will be Normal, click the arrow next to Normal and change the blend mode to Soft Light.
  5. If the results are too dark, lower the opacity slider next to the blend mode menu in the layers palette.
  6. If the photo is still too light, right click the soft light layer and duplicate it again. Adjust opacity as needed.

Tips:

  1. If portions of the image become too dark, use the eraser tool with a soft, low-opacity brush to erase away portions of the soft light layer.
