ACDSee 9 Photo Manager

ACDSee 9 Photo Manager

The Bottom Line
ACDSee 9 Photo Manager packs a lot of punch for under US$40. Although the user interface has the potential to become cluttered and unwieldy, this downside is outweighed by the sheer number of tools and features available. As a quick viewer, image browser, and photo oganizer, it shines. You'll probably want a supplementary photo editing tool, but for quick edits, ACDSee has you covered.
Pros
  • Browse, organize, manage, and edit many types of files in one place. Supports 100+ file types.
  • Outstanding number of options for browsing and organizing digital photos.
  • Supports EXIF and IPTC metadata standards. Supports digital camera RAW files.
  • Quickly open and view single images by double-clicking each file in Windows Explorer.
  • Flexible control of file associations.
Cons
  • Interface can become crowded with panels, panes, and tabs. There are 12 panes in the browser alone.
  • Workspace is customizable, but there is not a feature to save custom workspace layouts.
  • Sub-menus remain on-screen even when not focused in a main menu. This can be confusing.
  • Some dialog boxes and preview windows are small and can't be resized.
  • Received "ACDSee has encountered an error and will close" error multiple times during my review.
Description
  • View, organize, enhance, print and share 100+ multimedia formats including images, video, and fonts.

  • Device Detector automatically downloads images from cameras/scanners using the settings you specify.

  • Add keywords, captions, categories, ratings and notes. Browse and search media in a number of ways.

  • Correct and enhance photos with an integrated image editor for common corrections and effects.

  • View thumbnails from multiple folders in one view. Complete file management: copy/move/rename/etc.

  • Temporarily flag images for processing in an image basket. Batch rotate, size, convert, and adjust.

  • Integrated CD & DVD burning for archival & sharing. Incremental & full database backup/restoration.

  • Edit options: exposure, shadow/highlights, repair, red eye, crop, noise, sharpness, effects, more.

• Sharing options: email, slide show, CD/DVD, Video CD, screen saver, HTML Albums, PDF, Flash.

  • Printing options: Print full page images, contact sheets, or layouts.

Guide Review - ACDSee 9 Photo Manager
I've had my ups and downs with ACDSee over the years. The last version I reviewed was ACDSee 6 and I advised existing users to stick with version 5. Now it's up to version 9, and my opinion has changed. There are still some interface issues as noted in my "cons" above, but the user experience has improved, and the sheer number of features makes the interface issues easier to live with.

The new Quick View mode once again makes it usable as a speedy single-image viewer. From there, one click takes you to either of the Full Viewer or Photo Browser modes. The Photo Browser is where you'll spend most of the time, cataloging and browsing the media files on your computer, network, and removable storage.

ACDSee 9 Photo Manager packs a lot of punch for under US$40. It's rare to find a photo manager with this many features and options for browsing and organizing files. In addition, it has integrated image editing tools for some of the most common tasks such as cropping, adjusting overall image tone, removing red-eye, adding text, and so on. And after organizing and editing your images you can share them in a number of ways including slide shows (EXE, screen saver, Flash, HTML, or PDF formats), Web galleries, printed layouts, or by burning copies onto CD or DVD.

There are far too many features for me to describe them all here; fortunately ACD Systems offers a free, fully-functional 30-day trial of the software so you can download it and try before you buy.
