Tricks for Navigating with the Timeline in Adobe Photoshop Album

Use the Timeline to Navigate Your Photo Collection

By , About.com Guide

This tip also applies to the free Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition.

You probably know that when you are viewing by date in the photo well, you can hold your mouse over a bar in the timeline to see which month it represents and click on the bar to jump to that month. But did you know that the timeline works similarly when you are viewing by folder location or by import batch?

When viewing by folder location, each bar in the timeline represents a folder with pictures, listed in alphabetical order by path. Hold your mouse over the bar to see what folder it is and click to jump to that folder. An unshaded bar represents a folder where all the pictures are hidden. To restrict the view to photos in a set of folders you can drag the end point markers (the double arrows at both ends of the timeline) inward until they contain only the folders you want to see.

When viewing by import batch, each bar in the timeline represents an import event. Hold your mouse over the bar to see the import source and date and click on a bar to jump directly to that import batch.

By the way, if the little arrows on either end of the timeline are blue instead of gray, it means the timeline extends beyond the width of the screen. You can click these arrows to scroll more of the timeline into view.
