Wacom Graphire vs. Intuos

Friday January 14, 2005
If you'd like to own a graphics tablet, but can't decide whether the higher-priced Wacom Intuos model is worth the cost difference compared to the Graphire model, here is the opinion of one user who owns them both: Wacom Graphire vs. Intuos Tablet Review

Personally, I just wish my Wacom Intuos3 would work! Since I got it, it's had a problem where the cursor suddenly freezes and you have to lift the pen off the surface of the tablet to get it moving again. Wacom informed me that they were aware of the problem and were working on a driver update to correct it. That was in September. In addition, I'd been having problems where my wireless keyboard would randomly skip characters. I never connected the two problems until recently when I unplugged the useless Wacom from the USB port and my keyboard problems disappeared.

Has anyone else experienced these kinds of problems with Wacom Intuos3? Let us hear from you. I've held back on this rant for a long time, hoping Wacom would come through with the promised update, but come on... 5 months is unacceptable. I never had this problem with my older Intuos tablet, but apparently I'm not the only one to experience it with Intuos3. I still think Wacom tablets are great, but unless you can test an Intuos3 on your system before buying, I suggest you buy one where it can be returned, or go with the Graphire model, which doesn't seem to have this affliction as far as I know.

(Full disclosure: This tablet was an evaluation unit given to me by Wacom. I've avoided writing about it until now in the hope that a fix would be forthcoming. If I had paid for the product, I would have requested a refund long ago.)

Update: Since I originally posted this, Wacom has contacted me with some additional troubleshooting suggestions and assurances that new driver software could be available as soon as next week. Currently I have the Intuos3 connected through a USB 1.1 hub and the problem seems to be less frequent, but not 100% cured. I'll keep you posted on further developments.

Update #2: There's a happy ending! You can read it here.
