What about Photoshop Elements 6 in Snow Leopard?

Friday August 28, 2009

FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) is quickly spreading regarding Photoshop Elements 6 compatibility under Snow Leopard. This is all based on one wiki page which has flagged Photoshop Elements 6 with a compatibility status of NO after restoring from a Time Machine backup. Aside from being skeptical of anything from a site with "wiki" in its title, common sense tells me that restoring a program like Photoshop Elements from a backup is not an appropriate way to test it for compatibility under a new operating system.

I took some time to a do a bit of research and what I have gathered based on comments across the web, is that Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac is working fine for many users under Snow Leopard. Aside from that one wiki page and other articles referring to it, I was unable to find one comment from a user saying that it didn't work. Unfortunately, I was not able to find any official document from Adobe stating whether testing had been done for Photoshop Elements 6 under Snow Leopard, or if it would be supported. I will be asking my contacts at Adobe to respond here with a comment on this matter.

Also keep in mind that Snow Leopard is not a required update and it's perfectly acceptable to hold of on an update until a point release is available, or until more information comes in regarding compatibility with your important software. If you're a Photoshop Elements for Mac user who has upgraded to Snow Leopard, I invite you to let us know how it is working for you in the comments below. There is also a discussion going over at Adobe Forums: Photoshop Elements for Snow Leopard?

Thanks Sue.

It’s just too bad that Adobe wouldn’t test this and let us know.

The genius bar indicated to check off Rosetta when loading SL. That activates sw to run older sw. I did so and elements 4 and Illustrator open up. They were not removed by the installer, so as a precaution it appears to load rosetta either at install or afterrwards to be able to run some older sw

Just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. The existing installation of Photoshop Elements 6 works great. It actually seems a bit faster when loading files, too.

It worked fine if I used the normal Installation => Install on Leopard. It does not however work if I used the “erase&install” and restored data from Time Machine. In this case it crashes with the licensing error.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I cannot scan using Photoshop Elements. I can still scan using Preview. For this reason, I assume the issue is with Photoshop Elements

After setting iPhoto preference on Edit to PSE6, I can select a photo and select edit and nothing happens. B4 SL it worked just fine.

too funny! sue is “…skeptical of anything from a site with “wiki” in its title…” and posts these ramblings on “about.com”

After reading all post regarding issues restoring PSE from time machine, I decided to install Snow Leopard, restoring from Time Machine only OS settings and system folders. All applications were reinstalled from their original disks, including PSE. Unfortunately, PSE 6 was the only one didn’t work. I uninstalled it, then deleted all folders and files with Adobe, PSE or Photoshop name, then reinstalled again. Still not working. I get a license error. I don’t know what else to do.

I purchased Snow Leopard on Friday and installed it Saturday. No problems what-so-ever with Elements, but problems with my Internet server and MobileME are a different matter! Note: This e-mail being sent from a PC. I have spent daily, hourly calls with Apple Tech specialists tying to restore connections and resolve the issues! My advise is to wait until “patches” are ready.

I just installed Snow Leopard on my MBP, which I bought in August, and just did a quick test run with Photoshop Elements 6 and it works fine. No issues thus far. I didn’t do an erase and install since my laptop is only a month and a half old; I just installed over Leopard.

(11) Rev David Coleman says:

Snow Leopard is great and leave much more room on your disc, but it is hugely unstable, even with Apple native apps. Don’t be so smug – wait until you lose an elaborate graphic in the middle of an hour’s work. We need the fixes for SL and we need them now!

Photoshop Elements 6 will not work on my computer after installation of Snow Leopard. Three times I tried to import a file, and 3 times it failed to work, causing me to have to force quit the program.

(13) FORRES KUIT says:

SL essentially rendered my PSE 6 useless. I’ve tried everything trick I found out there. 64 bit startup, rosetta, uninstalls, reinstalls. Even tried changing some image tags from jpeg to png as I thought it was just the jpeg/jpg. No use.

(14) Moultrie Creek says:

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my PSE6 is crashing so often that I have removed it from my system. I think I’ll stick with Pixelmator.

I use snow leopard and elements 6.0 crashes every time I load a photo. I updated to element 8.0 yesterday and I found that it crashed after booting up. I gave up and asked for a refund.
