Share Your Experiences with Online Photo Editing Software

Friday January 2, 2009
Online software is really gaining in popularity recently. This web-based software runs right in your Web browser and does not require you to install anything onto your personal computer. Much of it is free, also. Many web-based applications can be just as powerful as their desktop versions. But have online photo editors gotten to that point yet?

Do you use an online photo editor as your primary photo editing application, or do you only use them for special situations, such as quick edits while you're on the road with your laptop? If you use online photo editors on a regular basis, I'd like to hear more about what you use, why you like it, and how you use it. And if you don't use an online photo editor or have never tried one, let me know why.

I understand the trend, but online photo editing is a bad idea in my opinion. I would much prefer a tiny desktop application (also called a portable app) instead.
First, you have to upload your photo. Even if your computer is fast, your upload connection is limited to, let say 50kbs. So if your photo is 3MB size, it will take something like 8mn to upload!
Then, I’m using Gimp quite often. I know that if I have 4 or 5 photos I’m working on at the same time, it starts to be slow.
Imagine the load for a server that needs to process 100 people at the same time!
So, I think it’s OK for casual use and it makes nice demos of what we can do with Flash or web 2.0 technologies, but that’s it.
