SnagIt 9 Screen Capture Software Released Today

Tuesday June 10, 2008
Today, TechSmith released SnagIt 9. SnagIt has been my favorite screen capture tool for a long time, and TechSmith is always surprising me with new features I didn't know I needed. I have only spent a short time with SnagIt 9 so far, but they have done it again.

The new multiple image capabilities and auto-storing of captures is going to save me huge amounts of time. Now I'll be able to take several variations of screen shots and decide later which ones works best for the final product, rather than having to re-capture an image that turned out to be not quite right. And I can more easily create a mashup combing multiple screen captures.

The SnagIt Editor also has a much improved user interface, putting the tools I use most front and center, and making everything more accessible. I can't wait to write my next tutorial and really put SnagIt through the paces. For now, I'm still exploring and I will be updating my SnagIt Review soon, but my first impression is that SnagIt 9 is a winner and worthwhile upgrade for existing SnagIt users.

Update: Existing customers can purchase SnagIt 9 for $19.95 through August 9, 2008. After 60 days, the upgrade price goes up to $24.95.

The new interface in version 8 is horrible. I end up using version 8 most of the time.

Snagit 9 apparently cannot save captures to Acrobat pdf format. “Pdf” is not a format “save” option. Acrobat “help” contains no “acrobat” or “pdf” references. Acrobat Standard and Professional users, however, may save htm pages to their acrobat “printers”. (Click Ctrl-P”, select the acrobat “printer”.

Qaz: You are mistaken. I have PDF as a save option in SnagIt 9 and I also find references to it in the Help file. PDF is listed as a supported save format in the SnagIt 9 User’s Guide, page 186, which you can download here: http://www.techsmith.com/learn/snagit/documentation.asp

And the question was asked an answered in their support forum here: http://forums.techsmith.com/showthread.php?t=8652
