Stop Saying DPI When You Mean PPI!

Tuesday November 13, 2007
This whole issue of resolution would be a lot less confusing to newbies if people would use the correct terminology! I can't tell you how often I get messages from frantic people who have been asked to provide a publisher with an image of 300 DPI. They go to the software looking to figure this out and the term DPI is no where to be found… all they see is PPI, the correct term. To be fair, most of the people asking for 300 DPI don't even know what they're asking for… they're just repeating what someone else told them. If you've recently referred to a digital image in terms of DPI, you're wrong, and you may need to brush up on Image Size and Resolution.

I run across the misuse of the terms DPI & PPI all the time. Sad part is many who confuse the terms are supposedly familiar with digital imaging.
