Do you use The GIMP?

Saturday September 22, 2007
The GIMP is one of the most popular and powerful free, open-source photo editors out there. If you are using the GIMP, I'd like to know if you are using the standard GIMP user interface, or Scott Maschella's GIMPshop hack that makes The GIMP more like Photoshop. I am considering posting tutorials for The GIMP, and I'm torn on whether I want to use the standard user interface or GIMPshop. Tell me what you think in the comments and by voting in the poll.

I haven’t tried the Gimp shop, however I do use Gimp standard and I think its the best thing I ever downloaded and done some brilliant works with this.
It wasn’t difficult to get atound even for a beginer and I have had no problems with it at all.

Hi Sue

I use the Gimp almost exclusively now. I have tried the interface hack a year or so back but moved back to Gimps standard interface. One thing to bear in mind is that once you are familiar with the Gimp’s own interface it quickly becomes very simple and quick to use. Another point is the Hack is not supported by the Gimp and is almost never up to date. I’d go with the standard interface.

Especially as the official release 2.4 is imminent.

Regards Pete

I use the standard interface for The GIMP amd PaintShopPro v7.0. I’m a linux user and PSP will work under Crossover. I’ve never used Photoshop since it was too expensive. I’d recommend GIMP to anyone. It’s powerful and has a lot of addons. I’d recommend it to anyone! and being Open Source and Free is definitely a selling point (smile)

I’ve always used the standard Gimp interface – being able to define your own keyboard shortcuts on the fly makes it SO easy to use – File -> Preferences -> Interface then turn on ‘Use dynamic keyboard shorts’ Not sure why every program doesn’t have this feature.

I would definitely come back if you were to put up some GIMPshop tutorials!!! There’s an abundance of PS tutorials online!!! The need there is not great at all! Practically everywhere you look you can find PS tutorials!! I’ve been having to try to use Photoshop tutorials because there just aren’t many GIMP tutorials and I’ve not yet even seen **one** GIMPshop tutorial at all! The need for GIMPshop tutorials is definitely there!!! I have to just use whatever I can get and wing it from there! The GIMP manual is pretty good for GIMPshop use but the technique is not always the same in GIMPshop as it is in GIMP and it also doesn’t give you tips and tricks like other tutorials normally do. Photoshop tutorials are often times closer to GIMPshop than GIMP tutorials too.

I vote GIMPshop!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!! I think I could learn even faster if I actually had tutorials that were specific to my own software!
