Corel Announces Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI

Tuesday September 12, 2006
Today, Corel Corporation announced the release of Paint Shop Pro Photo XI. This release introduces a slight name change for the enduring graphics software, highlighting the photo editing capabilities in this software that's long been a popular all-purpose graphics tool.

Corel recently demonstrated many of the new features to me and Time Machine looked like a lot of fun. I also loved the enahanced curves and levels tool with auto-fixes and and manual controls all in one place. Of course, all the previous features that made Paint Shop Pro unique are still there, too.

Check back for my updated review of Paint Shop Pro Photo XI soon. Sonja is also busy is working up some tutorials based on the new features, but meanwhile, keep reading for a summary of what's new.

Update: Sonja's tutorial on The Time Machine in PSP Photo XI is ready now, so download the trial and take it for a test spin!

Paint Shop Pro Photo XI offers several new features and enhancements, especially in the area of digital photography, including:

  • Photo Organizer, an integrated photo management center.

  • Quick Review, for managing and sharing slide shows.

  • Photo Trays, for gathering photos to use in your projects.

  • Image Information Panel, for adding captions, ratings, keywords, dates, and reviewing metadata.

  • Photo Downloader, to automatically import digital camera photos.

  • Enhanced Emailing, with options to send photos and video clips as slide shows, embedded emails, or attachments.

  • Enhanced Crop Tool, with a toolbar for quickly selecting common print sizes and rotating the crop selection.

  • Enhanced Curves and Level, combining a histogram, advanced controls and one click auto fixes into a single dialog box.

  • Video File Support, for previewing and extracting frames from digital camera video clips.

  • Color Changer tool, for replacing colors in an photo while retaining tonal variations.

  • Depth of Field Effect, for applying focus to a specific region of a photo for emphasis.

  • Skin Smoothing, for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and other skin flaws.

  • Time Machine, for reproducing photographic styles from the 1830's to the 1980's such as daguerreotype, albumen photos, cyanotypes, platinum prints, early color autochrome, and more.

  • Film and Filters, for simulation of classic traditional film and filter effects such as warming or cooling filters, and glamour, sunset, and earth tone effects.

Paint Shop Pro Photo XI also includes enahanced Raw camera file support and support for Corel Painter and Painter Essentials files. Corel Snapfire Plus SE is also included. This is a free 30 day preview of the full Snapfire Plus features. After the 30 day preview, users can continue using Corel Snapfire's free features to share, enhance and organize digital photos and videos.

Just when you get comfortable with a version a new one comes along! Ha. From what I understand, upgrade buyers can keep SnapFire Plus SE after 30 days, if they aren’t happy with PSP XI. That, and a discount from Epsom.
I guess I’m going to check it out, upgrade price is $59, decisions, decisions.

I just purchased the upgrade and I can’t read the help file. The font is way too small.

I’d love to try out some of the new options, but since I can’t read how to do it, I can’t try them out.

Dianne: Have you tried adjusting font settings in Windows via display properties? If that doesn’t help, I’d suggest you file a complaint at Corel.com.
