First Wide Format Pen Tablet: Wacom Intuos3 6x11

Tuesday November 1, 2005
A few weeks ago, as I was working on my reviews of the Intuos3 and Graphire4, using my dual monitors and wide-screen laptop, I was thinking about how popular wide-screen and dual monitors have become recently, and I wondered to myself how long it would be before we'd start seeing wide-format graphics tablets. Well, I didn't have to wonder very long -- that day has come. Today Wacom introduces the world’s first wide-format pen tablet at a price of $389.95. The Intuos3 6x11 is specifically designed for photographers, designers and artists who are using multiple monitors or a widescreen display.

The Intuos3 6x11 features an active area with an aspect ratio (height-to-width) that is a great match to the screen aspect ratio of either a widescreen display or two standard displays used together. The physical size, or footprint, of the Intuos3 6x11 is 16.5 inches wide x 10.3 inches deep and includes two sets of ExpressKeys and Touch Strips. Otherwise, the wide-format Intuos3 offers all the same features as the other Intuos3 sizes, as described in my review.

This tablet is as good as other Wacom products (very good) but the 6×11 size matches no screen resolution I can find. And also doesn’t match any two screen side-by-side resolution. The closest resolution to it’s proportions would be 1920×1080, the resolution for 1080 HD video (the tablet’s proportions would scale to 1920×1047) but monitors don’t come in that size. Using my 1920×1200 monitor I have to portion off 1.4 inches of the tablets live area to work at 1:1. So I’m really using the tablet at 6×9.6 inches. a screen resolution of 1440×900 or 1680×1050 would have the same issue. I’m puzzled at the choice.

Well seems to work nicely for my 2500×1600 center monitor, no dead zones at all.

I keep my pallets & brushes on one of the side 1200×1600 monitors(portrait mode).

Other is for watching movies or chatting with friends.
