Freeware Find: Crop JPEGs Losslessly with Jpegcrop

Sunday November 9, 2003
I'm surprised none of the mainstream photo editors offer a lossless JPEG cropping option. In fact, Jpegcrop is the only software I know of that allows you to crop JPEG images without re-compression.

The software is very basic. To crop losslessly, you just open a JPEG, drag a selection for the area you want to keep, and click the "Save Frame As" button. Your crop selection will be restricted to the block sizes necessary for lossless cropping and you can optionally choose to display the block grid. In addition, the software will losslessly rotate, flip, and transpose JPEG images, and you can print a single image. Unfortunately; you can't batch process several JPEGs quickly--each file has to be opened one at a time. It's very simple to use and if you want lossless JPEG cropping, I'm pretty sure it's the only thing going right now.

The source code of Jpegcrop is freely available for software developers who wish to add lossless JPEG cropping to their software.
